모든 것은 한 곳의 전시장으로 부터 시작되었다.
It all began from a single exhibition space.

상징적인 장소에서, 완벽한 성과를 보여야한다는 압박.
The pressure to deliver a perfect outcome in a symbolic location.

그러다, 문득 뇌 한구석에서 고함치는 목소리.
Then, a voice suddenly shouted from a corner of my mind.

‘이봐, 너 너무 집착하고 있지 않아?’
“Hey, aren’t you obsessing too much?”

무언지 모를 속박에서 벗어나 만화를 그리고 싶었다. 장소 또한 예외는 아니었다. 그렇기에 사랑하는 내 나라를 떠나 타국에서 작업을 해보겠다는 결심을 다졌었다.
I wanted to draw comics while breaking free from being shackled to the unknown. That went for the location, too. That is why I made the firm decision to leave my beloved home country and work elsewhere.

‘하지만 각오가 무색하게, 채 몇개월도 지나지 않아서 다시 흔들리고 말기야?
어째서 또, 모든 것이 완벽하지 않으면 작업 전부가 실패작이라도 될 것처럼 이토록 경직되어있는거야?’
“But despite that resolve, how can this be happening after only a few months? Why am I so rigid, as if my whole works would be a failure if the place isn’t right or if everything isn’t perfect?”

더군다나 내가 쥐고 있는 것은 만화. 가장 자유롭기에 선택한 나의 도구. 그럼에도 나는 왜 스스로를 구속이라는 목줄에 채우기위해 돌아가려하나. 진절머리 나게도 또다시, 안전한 이야기 속의 안전한 시간 속에 숨으려 하는가?
What I hold in my hand is ‘comics’—the tool I chose because it seemed the most free. Yet, why do I keep returning to put the leash of bondage around my own neck? Am I sick and tired of myself, trying once again to hide within the safe time of a safe story?


만화를 예술로 부른다면, 예술은 장소에 속박되지 않는다. 그 본질도 빼앗기지 않는다.
만화가 예술이라면, 어떤 장소에서도 만화로서 있을 수 있다.
If comics is called art, then art is not bound by place. Its essence cannot be stolen. If comics is art, it can exist as comics in any place.

그리고 그 장소와 시간은 만화가인 내가 결정할 수 있다.
마치 우리가 만화 속 이야기를 창조하듯이.
And I, as a cartoonist, can decide that place and time.
Just as we create stories within the pages.



벗어날 수 없는 번뇌속에서 이번에 내가 내린 답.
Out of the inescapable cycle of agony, this is the answer I have found.
